I’m traveling a lot this year, so recently I decided to purchase a Canon EOS 7D dSLR to document my experiences. As many of you may know, most dSLR cameras can shoot both still images and 1080p video. The large sensor of a dSLR, combined with an equally large lens, tends to produce very cinematic footage.
This weekend I played around with my new 7D, and although I’m not a video professional, I have to say that I’m very pleased with the results. My cat, Dario, wasn’t exactly the most exciting subject, but he didn’t seem to mind being on camera. :)
The footage could have benefited from some color grading, but I wanted to keep the results true to what comes straight out of the camera. Future improvements may include an external microphone and a tripod or steadicam. However, for being handheld, the results turned out pretty well. The Canon 7D is a much heavier camera than a consumer grade camcorder, and that slow-moving inertia comes across nicely in the handheld shots.
